WesternGeco EM Data Processing and Inversion Services

Overview Library

WesternGeco has developed a wide range of services, products, and workflows specifically designed to help our clients successfully integrate EM data in all phases of the E&P cycle.

Feasibility Studies and Survey Design

By conducting a sensitivity analysis for your specific objective, we can ensure we establish the feasibility and the optimal parameters for a satisfactory EM survey. Using WinGLink, a software developed in-house and considered the EM industry standard for modeling, processing, and interpretation, we have an unparalleled track record for determining accurate and dependable assessments for your EM applications. Feasibility can be performed using simple 1D models, or using more precise 2D and 3D modeling taking into consideration anisotropy. Our advanced feasibility analysis even includes 3D inversion of synthetic data to determine whether the target can be successfully recovered after a survey.

We then finalize the survey design with the client using our EM-Connect Petrel plug-in. The Petrel environment incorporates all other available G&G information, including seismic horizons, wells, etc.

Data Processing and QC

Using our Land EM and marine EM operational experience, as well as our state-of-the-art software, we provide a complete data processing and QC suite of services.

We also provide

  • onboard reprocessing services for marine EM surveys
  • raw data processing (from time series to frequency domain)
  • data QC
  • visualization and qualitative analysis
  • 1D anisotropic inversions.

Navigation/geometrical and geophysical data are processed and merged using our proprietary EM-Xpress software.

Integrated Inversions and Interpretation

The combination of EM with seismic and other geophysical measurements provides valuable information far beyond that provided by each individual technology. We have developed the technology and workflows necessary to provide solutions for the integrated interpretation and inversion of EM data.

Our 2D and 3D inversion algorithms are parallelized and optimized for solving large EM problems. They are fully anisotropic and can incorporate various types of constraints from available G&G data and the target characteristics.

Our seismic geobody-driven EM inversion workflow extracts geobodies from seismic amplitude cubes, upscales them into grids appropriate for EM inversion, and applies “masks” that focus the inversion process onto those areas.

The above techniques introduce geophysical information and geological knowledge into the EM inversions so that the low resolution and non-uniqueness of EM data can be reduced. Going a step further towards integrated interpretation, we also offer Simultaneous Joint Inversion of EM and seismic and/or gravity data. We use Petrel software as the platform for integration and also Omega software for seismic processing and simultaneous joint inversion.

Training

We also offer training on non-seismic technologies and software, which can be held at our centers or at the client offices.
