Our new 3D prestack acoustic Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) uses the two-way wave-equation to produce high-resolution velocity models. FWI performs forward modeling to compute the differences between the acquired seismic data and the current model, and a process similar to reverse time migration of the residual dataset to compute a gradient volume and to update the velocity model. Now available for commercial projects, FWI is suitable for all acquisition geometries, including wide-azimuth (WAZ) and full-azimuth (FAZ) surveys. The time-domain implementation complements our Reverse Time Migration (RTM) algorithm and produces results that compare well to frequency domain inversion, with the advantage of being efficient in 3D. When combined with imaging using RTM, the final product improves due to consistent wavefield solutions throughout the depth imaging workflow.
