Increase underground gas storage system efficiency by improving responsiveness to requests to withdraw gas from the storage system.

Challenge

Develop a semi-automated expert system for UGS management, suitable for use in providing day-to-day (24-hour period) optimization of a fully instrumented and controlled UGS system.

Solution

The DECIDE! application was used as an integrated platform, enabling the automatic acquisition, analysis, and preparation of high-frequency (same-day) system data. A neural network model optimized calculation of shut-in reservoir pressure. Once validated, this shut-in reservoir pressure helped validate the reservoir model.

DECIDE! software automatically issues notification alerts to the user should the reservoir model need updating.

DECIDE! software uses the valid reservoir model, the number of currently available wells, and the amount of gas requested to determine optimal gas withdrawal rates while minimizing reservoir pressure gradient among the wells. The optimized well set points are saved back to a shared database for reference purposes.
