Integrated topsides approach to controlling solids build-up
M-I SWACO Production Technologies has developed a range of technologies to control the production of sand and others solids. Solids production, whether produced from the reservoir or introduced through well servicing is a growing problem for the upstream industry. It also is one that if left uncontrolled can cause major flow assurance problems.
Downhole sand exclusion measures often have limited effectiveness. For that reason the most viable and prudent approach is topsides sand handling capability. Typically, it is a question of when, rather than if sand or other solids is produced into the topside facilities.
The key to successful topsides sand handling is flexibility in the design, technology selection and location in the process. Sand production is unpredictable, rarely consistent and its management solution never universal. Thus, sand management is not just a separation problem and almost always includes factors such as accumulation, fluidization, transportation, cleaning and disposal, all needing careful consideration.
