Effectively recovers base fluid for re-use, facilitates on-site cuttings disposal
The M‐I SWACO TPS‐1S system delivers proven Thermal Phase Separation technology in a compact, highly portable unit. It is ideal for remote drilling sites, ecologically sensitive areas, and projects on which small volumes of mud and cuttings are expected.
This system is the advanced, second generation of our THERMAL PHASE SEPARATION (TPS) and LOW TEMPERATURE THERMAL DESORPTION (LTTD) technologies. Our TPS systems are highly efficient processes for reclaiming valuable drilling fluids, recovering hydrocarbons, minimizing waste and preparing solid materials for disposal.
The TP-1S incorporates the high separation efficiency, recovered oil quality, cost effectiveness and low emissions that have made TPS technology the industry preference. The unit offers rugged construction, skid‐mounted design and a compact, 10 x 50‐ft (3 m x 15 m) frame. Its performance, ruggedness and portability make the TPS‐1S the preferred mud and cuttings treatment solution for remote drilling locations.
How It Works
The TPS process separates and recovers hydrocarbon‐based drilling fluids from spent mud and cuttings, as well as from pit or lagoon sludges. TPS uses a closed‐loop and indirectly heated system. Hydrocarbons removed during desorption can be re‐used in the mud circulation system since there is no thermal degradation during the treatment.
Operating on the principle of indirectly heated thermal desorption, hydrocarbons are volatized from oily solids in a closed chamber using carefully controlled heat. Temperature levels and retention time in the chamber are closely monitored to ensure maximum phase separation without exceeding the fractionation point of the base oil.
Desorbed vapors are removed and rapidly condensed in a condensing system. The condensate is then divided into fractions using a specially engineered oil/water separator.
Recovered base oil is collected, tested and recycled as base fluid and/or used as fuel. Water is recovered and is also used to re‐wet treated solids. Treated solids can be safely disposed of onsite.
