MUD WASH

Overview Library

HSE-acceptable water-wetting wash or push pill

MUD WASH is a concentrated nonionic surfactant which aids in the removal of hydrocarbons, oil‐base materials and pipe dope from metal surfaces. MUD WASH is engineered to leave metal components in a water‐wet condition. MUD WASH surfactant is free of nonyl phenol and alkyl phenol ethoxylates and is classified as non‐hazardous under CHIP regulations.

Applications

MUD WASH surfactant can be added to weighted water‐base mud, drill water, seawater or brine as part of a viscous push pill or water‐wetting wash pill. Sufficient volume should be used to give a minimum of five minutes contact time. Pump rates should be designed to give turbulent flow.

MUD WASH surfactant can be used at 2 – 10% v/v, depending on the application. The product can be added either directly to the pill pit or via the hopper. Once fully dispersed, agitation should be avoided to prevent excessive foaming.

To ensure water‐wet pipe, the MUD WASH spacer should be followed by SAFE‐SURF W, SAFE‐SURF O or other water‐wetting surfactant packages formulated to remove oily films.

Advantages

  • Excellent solvent spacer for pipe dope removal or oil mud displacement
  • Immiscible with brine to give distinct interface
  • Does not contain BETX components
  • Can be used without mixing or dilution
  • Can be handled with the same ease as synthetic‐base fluids
