Environmentally acceptable emulsifier for synthetic-based muds

PARAMUL primary emulsifier is designed for used in the PARATEC mud system. It provides excellent emulsion stability and preferential wetting of solids by the continuous phase, filtration control and temperature stability.

PARAMUL emulsifier is used in conjunction with the PARAWET secondary emulsifier in the PARATEC system. It can also be used as a primary emulsifier in other PARA‐, VERSA‐, and NOVA‐ systems and also functions as a secondary emulsifier.

Applications

PARAMUL emulsifier is designed to provide excellent emulsion and oil wetting. PARAMUL additive contributes to the high‐temperature, high‐pressure (HTHP) filtration control and the temperature stability of the system. It is effective over a wide temperature range and in the presence of contaminants. PARAMUL emulsifier is used in conjunction with the secondary PARAWET emulsifier in the PARATEC system to enhance the emulsion characteristics.

Initial system formulations require 17‐29 kg/m3 (6‐10.2 lb/bbl) depending on the properties desired and other components in the system. Daily treatments usually are in the 0.3‐2.85 kg/m3 (0.1‐1 lb/bbl) range.  For high‐temperature applications (temperature >150°C/300°F), initial system formulations require 25‐40 kg/m3 (8.75‐14.0 lb/bbl).

PARAMUL emulsifier meets the Norwegian environmental requirements to be classified as a yellow product.

Advantages

  • Improves emulsion stability
  • Functions as a secondary wetting agent
  • Provides filtration control
  • Helps maintain HTHP filtrate in a water‐free state
  • Improves the thermal stability and contamination‐resistance of the systems
