Modified starch derivative filtration additive for water-based drilling fluids

DUAL‐FLO filtration‐control additive is a specially modified starch derivative used in FLOPRO NT and other water‐base systems. When used in conjunction with a bridging agent such as sized calcium carbonate or sized salt, it provides a thin, pliable, easily removed filter cake. DUAL‐FLO starch is a non‐ionic, acid‐soluble material especially suited for fluids containing salts or ion‐sensitive additives. DUAL‐FLO additive acts synergistically with FLO‐VIS PLUS viscosifier to enhance the Low‐Shear‐Rate Viscosity (LSRV) of the FLOPRO NT system.

Unlike most polyanionic cellulose (PAC) or starch‐base additives that reduce the viscosity of a typical reservoir drilling fluid system, DUAL‐FLO starch actually increases the LSRV. DUAL‐FLO filtration‐control additive can be used in freshwater and most brines including seawater, NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, NaBr and formate salt systems. DUAL‐FLO additive resists calcium contamination over a wide pH range and can be used at temperatures to 250°F (121°C). A thermal extender is recommended when DUAL‐FLO starch is used in wells with bottomhole temperatures exceeding 250°F (121°C). DUAL‐FLO starch filter cakes will readily degrade when exposed to a BREAKFREE starch‐specific enzyme breaker.

Advantages

  • DUAL‐FLO additiveʹs superb filtration control provides a thin, pliable, easily removed filter cake which minimizes formation damage and facilitates cleanup during completion
  • Acts synergistically with FLO‐VIS PLUS additive to enhance LSRV
  • Easily digested with BREAKFREE starch‐specific enzymes used for filter‐cake removal
  • Not adversely affected by salinity, and functions over a wide range of water chemistry
