Well Placement

Overview Library

In deepwater operations it's imperative to select the rotary steerable system that best provides accurate well path control in the specific drilling environment. The PowerDrive system uses full rotation to deliver precise trajectory control when drilling the aggressive doglegs deepwater wells often require. Continuous surveys and fast downlinking also improve drilling speed by eliminating micro-NPT.

PowerDrive Rotary Steerable Systems

The PowerDrive family of systems for optimized directional drilling is combinable with MWD and LWD sensors, including near-bit gamma ray. Systems can shorten well paths for angled wells, even in unconsolidated formations, and deliver different speed or torque as required. Settings for these two parameters are automatically maintained when drilling vertical wells to ensure the best possible wellbore quality and the shortest path.

Boundary Steering

Part of the Scope LWD service, PeriScope bed boundary mapper uses electromagnetic measurements to continuously monitor the position of fluid and formation boundaries. This information helps position the drill within the pay zone, maximizing reservoir contact and production rates.

Borehole Seismic Visualization

The SeismicVISION service delivers traditional borehole seismic measurements that reduce uncertainties ahead of the bit without interfering with drilling operations. VSPs update relevant geological horizons—for example, the base of salt—in real time. Drilling engineers use this information to make any adjustments in inclination needed to reach the target.

Petrel Drilling Workflows

Information gained by incorporating all available data into a geological model such as Petrel seismic to simulation software helps keep well trajectories away the from potential drilling hazards inherent in deepwater operations, such as drilling through salt and rubble zones.

Geology Imaging

The geoVISION imaging-while-drilling service delivers high-resolution images in real time. These reveal formation structure and geological features, such as fractures, enabling more accurate and efficient steering.

Real-Time Drilling

Experts at Operation Support Centers monitor drilling remotely. They ensure planned trajectories will deliver optimal well placement by interpreting unique seismic and other LWD measurements, which enables the real-time monitoring of fluid and formation boundaries. When drilling basalt and drilling or exiting salt, this workflow is critical to avoiding hazards and landing the well within the sweet spot.
