Optimize Well Location and Trajectory to Make Better Drilling Decisions
The Schlumberger Geomechanics group has developed a 3D approach, based on a mechanical earth model (MEM), to optimize well location and trajectory, focusing on reducing drilling risks and unscheduled events. The 3D analysis uses different sources of information—including 3D seismic, geophysical logs (wireline and LWD), and drilling event analysis—within the 3D structural and geological model to generate a comprehensive 3D MEM. The sensitivity analysis of the well trajectory is also investigated.
During the sensitivity analysis, the wellbore stability forecast is compared for different well trajectories, considering the lateral and vertical variability related to the complex geology. The developed MEM supports drilling decisions that include well trajectory, casing points, mud window, and potential drilling risks. Minimizing NPT associated with wellbore instability reduces the risk of major and catastrophic incidents and is required to complete the well on time and within budget.
