Lifelong Zonal Isolation
FlexSTONE advanced flexible cement technology represents a fundamental change to oil- and gas-well cementing. This sealant system has mechanical properties that are matched to the downhole stress environment. By enabling the set cement to conform to the changes that occur during the drilling, production, and abandonment cycles of the well, the FlexSTONE system can offer lifelong zonal isolation.
Each FlexSTONE slurry is individually designed for a specific well application. First, the stresses that the cement sheath will experience over the well’s life are predicted by numerical analysis modeling. Then, the system’s mechanical properties are customized using the FlexSTONE trimodal particle-size distribution technology to accommodate the predicted stresses.
FlexSTONE HT
Both the temperature and flexibility range of this set cement system have been increased with the FlexSTONE HT formulation. Deeper, hotter, more complex wells can be reliably sealed for life to achieve maximum production from the reservoir.
Cuttings and produced water injection offshore Norway
Norsk Hydro drilled Well B in the Grane field, North Sea, as a cuttings injector well. The well was also to be used temporarily as a produced water injector. Complete, long-term zonal isolation around the casing shoe was essential to ensure the injected fluids entered the Utsira formation as planned and were not lost to zones further up the well. The low fracture gradient in the formation added to the cementing challenges.
The cement bond and USI ultrasonic imager logs recorded 9 months after cementing indicated high-quality cement. During this time, the FlexSTONE system provided zonal isolation across the low-fracture-gradient formation.
CemSTRESS software quantifies the risk of wellbore cement sheath failure by applying stress analysis and sensitization criteria.
