Environmental impact assessment

EIA (Environmental impact assessment) is required for certain projects before regulatory or government consent will be granted. Each governmental or regulatory agency may have different requirements, but EIAs are technically similar in scope.

The procedure usually requires the developer or operator to compile ES (an environmental statement) describing the likely significant effects of the project on the environment and the proposed mitigation measures. The ES must be circulated to statutory consultation bodies and made available to the public for comment. The agency must consider ES contents and any comments before granting consent.
