MGSC Illinois, USA
The Midwest Geological Sequestration Consortium (MGSC), led by the Illinois State Geological Survey in partnership with the Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Schlumberger Carbon Services, will inject 1 million tonnes of CO2, over a 3-year period into a geological formation more than 1.5-km (5,000-ft) below ground level. Schlumberger is providing full project management for the design and construction of all wells associated with the storage part of the project and will participate with ADM and MGSC in the injection phase of the project. ADM provides the source of the CO2 from their ethanol production plant. The MGSC has been awarded over USD 60 million by the United States Department of Energy to implement the project.
Reggane, Algeria
In the Reggane project, Schlumberger provides a series of cross-disciplinary studies to evaluate several geological sites for potential CO2 storage. The work includes evaluating the local geology, building reservoir models, conducting geomechanical analysis, assessing risks, and developing a monitoring program. Using these studies, we provide information and advice on the injectivity, capacity, and containment of each site.
Sleipner, Norway
Offshore Norway, the world’s first industrial-scale CCS operation is under way at Statoil’s Sleipner field. Schlumberger provides key services, particularly our advanced 4D seismic monitoring, which, through time, records the evolution of the CO2 in the subsurface. These surveys have been performed under the frameworks of two major CCS study initiatives: the Saline Aquifer CO2 Storage (SACS) project and the CO2STORE project.
Otway Basin, Australia
Schlumberger provides technologies and project management personnel for Australia’s first demonstration of deep underground storage of CO2—the CO2CRC Otway project. The project has been created to gather information on geological storage processes and monitoring and verification technologies, at a site where 100,000 tonnes of CO2 will be stored. It features one of the world’s most comprehensive monitoring programs and includes a range of Schlumberger technologies, including Petrel seismic-to-simulation software and ECLIPSE reservoir simulation software. We are also providing a full suite of well logs and our EverCRETE CO2-resistant cement system.
