The PathMaker® 3-D Rotary Steerable System provides the operator with the technology to steer the wellbore precisely into the target while continuously rotating the drillstring. The system can be configured as either Point-the-bit or Push-the-bit depending on the application. All steering is done while continuously rotating the drillstring, thus maximizing efficiency. The PathMaker System functions with all of PathFinders real-time formation evaluation sensors/services for versatility and convenience. The PathMaker System can also be run with mud motors to increase bit RPM and improve penetration rates in specific formations.
To optimize performance, recent upgrades to the PathMaker System have been made to include Real-time Stick-slip and Vibration Detection (RSVD) and Real-time Pad Contact Caliper (RTPCC). RSVD was incorporated for use in extended reach and horizontal wells where detection of bottom-hole-assembly stick-slip and vibration detection at the surface becomes increasingly problematic. RSVD increases drilling efficiency and protects RSS and MWD/LWD tools from harmful vibrations.
The PathMaker System is the only system available today that transmits a real-time pad contact caliper measurement close to the bit. RTPCC measurements are used to optimize surface parameters for consistent directional results.
At the core of PathFinders MWD/LWD system is the modular fixed collar HDS-1L directional tool with positive-pulse telemetry. The tool provides continuous inclination and azimuth information and acts as the telemetry module to make real-time data transmission possible. The DataLink provides real-time communication with PathFinder LWD sensors. Operating modes are fully programmable at the surface. For flexibility, pulse width and transmitted parameters can be reprogrammed while the tool is downhole.
For HPHT applications, PathFinder offers the SURVIVOR Gravity MWD® system. The Gravity MWD® system uses the modular HDS-1G tool where magnetic interference and high pressure/high temperature prevents the use of conventional MWD and gyro survey tools. A DataLink connection can be included for real-time communication with the PathFinder LWD systems. A Gamma-ray sensor can be added to this service at the shop or the wellsite.
Smith offers the industrys most comprehensive range of drive systems. Depending on the application, either a Neyrfor Turbodrill or a premium positive displacement mud motor (PDM) may provide the best performance alternative for the customer. With the ability to offer a PDM or a Turbodrill, Smith is uniquely positioned to provide a superior drive system solution for the most challenging drilling applications.
